This was a pulsating encounter with the momentum swinging to and fro throughout the fixture and made for an outstanding afternoon's entertainment.
Bridgford were first on the board with 2 consecutive penalties in front of the sticks with full back Shane Wright making no mistake. Ashby replied with one of their own and, with the patience of the referee being tested, both kickers had more opportunities in the opposing half but neither were taken. Wright then slotted another before a key moment in the game where the Ashby 10 attempted a miss pass to put in the unmarked winger, but instead found that man Wright who made 80 metres before offloading to the supporting Josh Poole, who gleefully dived over. The extras were added and Bridgford went in 16-3 up.
The second half was bound to be testing with Ashby in the ascendancy and the breeze at their backs. They soon slotted a penalty and followed this with a converted try under the posts. Bridgford struck back quickly with Ian Brown finishing off a nice move out wide. Ashby again replied immediately and stayed in the game throughout, but further tries from winger Angelo Manesero and hooker Ash Watts (sponsored by DWB Electrical Solutions), with an important conversion from Wright, meant that the home side were victorious by the smallest of margins; 33-32 at full time.
Next week sees a huge away game at local rivals Mellish.
