The Beginning

Coaches from West Bridgford Rugby Club started delivering tag rugby coaching sessions at the local primary schools in 2006, using funds from Rushcliffe Borough Council and Sport England via the County Sports partnership.

Chris McManus was one of the original volunteers, with one of his schools, West Bridgford Junior School, winning the Rushcliffe Tag Rugby Tournament for Year 5 and 6. They went on to represent Rushcliffe area at the Nottinghamshire Tag Tournament in 2007.

Ken Campbell joined the team in 2007 which meant that the scheme could be expanded. More schools were be visited, including Cropwell Bishop, Carnarvon and Fernwood Junior Schools.

2008 and 2009 Seasons

Dilwyn Evans, the Club Chairman, managed to secure additional funding in 2008.
Due to this, additional coaches volunteered within the club including Caroline Towndrow and Luke Adams. Both were involved in coaching juniors and mini rugby at West Bridgford Club at the time.
The sessions took place within school hours as part of their sports activities, as well as after school clubs.

Since then, 10 schools have received tag rugby coaching sessions each season, including:

2010-2011 Season

The highlight of this season’s coaching sessions was the success of Edwalton Primary School. Caroline visited the school in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons, and managed to drum up a lot of interest in Years 5 and 6 . This meant that they managed to send a strong team to the Rushcliffe Schools Tag Rugby Tournament which they won!

They went on to win the Nottinghamshire Tag Tournament and represent the County at the National Finals.

They came third in the Under 11’s section of the National Finals! The children worked with true team spirit and played exceptionally well. Everyone was really proud of them.

Invitation to be included in the 2011-2012 Season

Once again, funding has been secured for the 2011-2012 season, with funding coming from Sportivate and Rushcliffe Borough Council. This is allowing the coaches to give over 60 sessions of rugby coaching.

This season, WBRFC is exanding its target audience to include more community based groups, like Scouts and Beavers.

Caroline will be taking the Bingham Beavers for their first taster session at the end of November, with the help of Bingham Rugby Club.

Some primary schools have already started receiving their coaching sessions, whilst others are lined up to start in the New Year.
